Most home gym guides are written for a house nobody in Britain lives in: a spare room the size of a double garage, a double garage the size of a barn. Real British homes are a box room above the stairs, a single garage full of bikes, a new-build flat with neighbours below, a garden office at the end of a damp lawn. This Christmas gift guide starts from the space, not the kit. For each type of home it picks the BrainGain equipment that fits, what it costs today, and the gift that makes the most of the room. Black Friday on 27 November is a good moment to buy the big items, so they are set up long before Christmas Day.

The box room: a gym that disappears by dinner

The third bedroom in most British semis is just big enough for a single bed and a chest of drawers. It can still be a proper gym if every item either folds or replaces ten others. The 24 kg SmartBells Evo (£159.99) replaces 15 pairs of dumbbells and changes weight with a one-second twist of the handle. The Core Bench (£99.99) has seven backrest positions and four seat positions, and folds to 87 x 29 x 50 cm, so it slides under the bed. Together they cost £259.98 and cover presses, rows, lunges, split squats and curls.

T3 gave the 24 kg pair a T3 Recommends award in June 2026. The Pennywise Pundit compares it with the 40 kg version below, which is the quickest way to decide which one fits the person you are buying for.

The single garage: barbell territory

A garage is the one room in a British house where you can drop a weight, bolt something down and make noise at 6am. That makes it the place for a barbell. The BrainGain Squat Rack (£179.99) is built from 60 x 60 mm steel with 6 mm brace plates, has 16 height levels and optional spotters, and bolts down for stability. It is designed for a 7 ft international bar, so pair it with the 20 kg Olympic bar (£129.99), rated to 450 kg, a set of lock jaw collars (£9.99) and plates: coloured bumper plates, black bumper plates or 12-sided plates, from £49.95.

Leave room on the floor for dumbbells. The 40 kg SmartBells Original (£279.99) covers 5 to 40 kg for the accessory work a barbell cannot do, and the SmartBells Dumbbells Stand (£99.99) keeps it off the cold floor. Our garage gym guide covers insulation, flooring and costs, and dumbbells vs barbells explains why you want both.

The flat: train quietly, store neatly

Flats have two rules: the neighbours below hear everything, and every square metre has a second job. That rules out dropping weights and favours kit you can put away. Adjustable dumbbells on a stand are the core: the 24 kg Evo for most people, or the 40 kg SmartBells Evo (£349.99) with its push-down-and-twist handle for heavier lifters. The stand brings them to waist height, so you set them down instead of lowering them to the floor.

Add a kettlebell for the days you have 15 minutes. The 18 kg adjustable kettlebell (£89.99) is seven kettlebells in one, from 4 to 18 kg, and the 9 kg version (£49.99) runs from 2 to 9 kg for beginners. Swing it on a mat, not a laminate floor. Tech Alchemy's short review shows the 18 kg kettlebell up close.

Start with the room you have, not the gym you have seen on Instagram.

The garden office: the lunchtime session

Plenty of British gardens now end in a cabin or garden office. If the person you are buying for works in one, the best gift is the one they can use between calls. The 18 kg adjustable kettlebell (£89.99) gives them swings, goblet squats and presses in 20 minutes, in less floor space than a desk chair. Add the 24 kg SmartBells Evo (£159.99) and the stand (£99.99) for rows and presses, and the garden office becomes a gym at lunchtime and an office again by 2pm.

Keep the steel dry. A garden room with insulation is fine. A damp shed is not, so bring the kit inside or cover it over winter.

The house share or student flat

Small budget, small room, a landlord who will not love holes in the wall. Go portable. The 9 kg kettlebell (£49.99) runs from 2 to 9 kg and fits under a desk. It is the cheapest piece of real training kit BrainGain sells. When they are ready for more, the 24 kg SmartBells Evo (£159.99) packs 15 pairs of dumbbells into two trays that fit in the corner of a bedroom.

The "everything" house: one box, every room

If you are not sure which home the gift is going to, the SmartBells Pro Gym Bundle (£619.99) works in almost all of them. It contains 40 kg adjustable dumbbells, an 18 kg adjustable kettlebell, the stand and the Adjustable Bench 2.0, with a 24-month warranty. If they already own SmartBells, the stand and the Core Bench (£99.99 each) add the rest.

What our customer survey says

BrainGain surveyed 73 verified customers in 2026. Most train at least three times a week, months after buying. The most common worry before buying was not space or training. It was warranty and trust in the seller, which is why every BrainGain dumbbell, kettlebell and bench in the UK store carries a 24-month warranty and we link to independent reviews like T3's instead of our own claims.

The verdict

The right home gym gift depends on the home. A box room wants the 24 kg SmartBells Evo and a folding bench. A garage wants a squat rack, a bar and plates. A flat wants adjustable dumbbells on a stand and a kettlebell. A garden office wants an adjustable kettlebell. If you only buy one thing for anyone this Christmas, make it the 24 kg SmartBells Evo at £159.99, because it fits every home on this list.
